[LinuxPPS] No initrd when building LinuxPPS kernel?

When I build the LinuxPPS kernel from the sources (retrieved via git),
I don't seem to be getting a ramdisk. Should I be at all concerned?
Am I missing some essential build step?

FWIW, the LinuxPPS kernel seems to boot up just fine, as long as I don't
accidentally have an "initrd" line in /boot/grub/menu.lst referencing a
nonexistent initrd.img-2.6.31 file.

I'm currently building the kernel on an Ubuntu 9.10 server system and
using LinuxPPS in place of Ubuntu's default kernel (2.6.31-14). And my
initial tests suggest that PPS (from a Garmin 18x LVC GPS) is working
just fine.
