Document it properly.
Find real-world examples that need this and/or supply alternatives as a
workaround (NMEA or somethign better...)

Yes.
Also this could give ideas about solutions to the open issue(s).
I.o.w.: it's a step in the right direction.
I think you should send out the patch before Christmas, without hurrying.
Then people could look at it during the holidays.
