I have this happen to me as well on occasion, perhaps 5% of the time from a 
cold system start and never once the system is running.  It just happened to 
me this morning however.  So Luca is not the only one seeing this but I think 
he may be the only one seeing this on every system restart.

I have an LED attached to my PPS signal and I can tell when it is being 
initialized by the driver since the LED will stop flashing for perhaps 20 
seconds and when this fails at start up the driver does NOT initialize the GPS 
(IE. the LED does not stop flashing).  I don't know what this tells us about 
this issue.  In my case it is intermittent which makes difficult to diagnose.
