when building the kernel, you might have missed two steps

after 
make 

you also need
make modules_install

and you also need to tell your bootloader to use the new kernel. I use lilo, and Gentoo has a dolilo command that automates the process. You need to find the equivalent on your system - look for the first program that runs after BIOS and before kernel on boot. It needs to be told of the new kernel, and then to rewrite the boot record to run that kernel
